Why I’m choosing a water bottle over a champagne flute

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

For me, New Year’s Eve has never held much appeal. Don’t like champagne. Don’t like giant cover charges that insist on including champagne. And certainly don’t like yawning my way toward midnight just to raise a glass of champagne.

But today surprised the hell out of me. And it had nothing to do with champagne.

Somehow, the Universe sent a total of 70-plus yogis into my two morning classes who brought an infectious joy and energy that no swanky champagne fete could ever top. Like an effervescent stream of continuous bubbles, my words miraculously flowed (they don’t always), their bodies flowed, and a celebration of presence, connection, and possibility filled the space.

Sweet, bare, sweaty feet draws far more delight than a pair of party shoes.

As a teacher, I’m blessed with a sacred vantage point that no other job I can think of affords. I’m given access into observing amazing souls reconnect with their bodies, minds, hearts, spirits. Watching a CEO giddily smile as he wiggles his toes in the air is a sight to behold. A stressed out college student sigh loudly in relief as she drops down into a Child’s Pose. A busy, multi-tasking mom turn back the clock and soar into Half Moon as though she could fly. She is flying. And I get to watch.

Teaching is the hardest, and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. Might sound cliche, but trust me, it’s not. Even a few years into this gig I still stumble. And when I do, man do I know it…a loud sigh that I didn’t cue. An eye roll. Or worse, my own internal narrator ready to beat the shit out of me for not getting it perfect.

But that’s the risk I take, every time I step up to do the job.”

Because in the end, it is so very worth it. And today underscored that. Sharing my love of the practice with others who love the practice, and celebrating a year of committing to being more alive, more human, and more available to everything this crazy life throws us is the best gift of all.

I love you my dear students, and I thank you for giving me the space to stumble, get up, and try again. All in the spirit of connecting with you.

Happy New Year!

Thanks for sharing! I agree, teaching is not an easy thing to do.
